An interview with Diane Le Maître, founder of the Diane Studio brand

  1. How did you develop your passion for sewing and creating accessories?

My mother-in-law lent me her sewing machine when I was pregnant with my first daughter. I started by making a mobile to decorate her future room, and that's how I began to familiarize myself with sewing. Then I moved on to sewing clothes, making dresses for myself and my daughter. Gaining confidence, and seeing that sewing was becoming a consuming passion, I gradually considered turning it into a business by creating accessories. Bags slowly became the obvious choice; I wanted to be able to make things for the whole family, offering a wide range that showcased my creativity.

2- What inspired you to specialize in bags and personalization with embroidery?

I've always loved bags, whether it's a handbag or a travel bag. A bag has been with me every day, from childhood to the woman and mother I am today. What I also love is the extraordinary diversity of shapes that can be created with bags and the function one wishes to give them. Embroidery was a natural choice, as it offered me the elegant and original touch that allows a creation to be personalized and for the client to make it their own.

3- Why did you choose to use 100% cotton fabrics and Liberty of London in your creations?

I decided to use 100% cotton fabrics because cotton is a natural material, unlike synthetic polyester. I want to bring an eco-responsible dimension to my creations by favoring natural fibers. I also use recycled cardboard and minimize packaging by avoiding unnecessary paper that would end up in the trash as soon as the package is opened. I've been passionate about floral prints since I was a child, especially the incredible Liberty of London fabrics, a passion passed down from my mother. It's also an ancestral craft that I greatly admire. Liberty of London is a high-end fabric that gives my products a unique look and makes them exclusive, as do all the other fabrics I use in my creations. My customers can choose from an incredible range of fabrics that are regularly updated, because I'm committed to offering unique and original designs.

4- What values and aesthetics do you wish to convey through your products?

The values I wish to convey through my creations are beauty and elegance, craftsmanship, local expertise, eco-responsibility, and handmade quality. My products must be both elegant and practical for everyday use, which involves extensive research and prototyping before arriving at the final version.

5- Can you tell us about the process of creating a personalized bag, from the idea to the final product?

Creating a bag begins with imagination and inspiration. I can be inspired in many ways by the nature around me, but also by fabrics, materials, objects, and even conversations! Once I have the image of my creation in my mind, I try to put it on paper. I bring it to life, then I try to find the right dimensions and assembly method. I then draw the pattern on paper, cut it out, and try assembling my bag to see if it works. If not, I make some adjustments. Next, I create several prototypes; usually three or four are necessary before I'm fully satisfied with the result. If I'm not happy with the result, I modify it and start again. Then, what a satisfaction when I finally arrive at the final prototype! Next comes the testing phase where I wear the bag and observe how it performs in everyday life, its sturdiness, and its durability over time. Finally, if everything is satisfactory, the marketing phase begins.

6- How do you choose the embroidery designs for each product? How important are they in your work?

The embroidery designs are carefully selected for their elegance, their consistency with the project, and their beauty. They bring a unique touch to each product and allow the customer to personalize each item as they wish.

7- What are the key steps to guarantee the quality and durability of your creations?

First, a simple and effective design, and carefully selected 100% cotton fabrics. Each pattern is the result of several hours of work required to develop multiple prototypes, which are then tested in real-world conditions to verify the strength of the seams and raw materials, as well as the practicality of the item. The hardware, such as rings, carabiners, and straps, is also selected for its durability and strength.

8- How does your work differ from that of other creators in the same field?

I think that over time, I've been able to establish my style and approach; my creativity allows me to adapt and constantly take on new challenges. The accessories I offer are handmade and therefore unique!

9- Have you considered collaborating with other artists or brands to expand your reach?

I've done a few collaborations, but I'd like to do more because I love the concept of exchange and opportunities between creators! If you'd like to collaborate with me, feel free to send me a message!

10- How do you envision the future of your company? Do you have any specific short-term and long-term projects or objectives?

I want my brand to grow and become a benchmark in the world of textile craftsmanship. I'd like to develop a line of simple yet elegant women's clothing, such as Peter Pan collar blouses, sleeveless vests, and elasticated carrot pants. I love items that are easy to make and comfortable to wear! Ideas for my future designs come to me very spontaneously, and I rarely plan the new items I intend to sell in advance!
